I went to the show in Philly saturday nite, and it was not pretty.
Sugarland opened the show, Jennifer Nettles is a very good singer and showman. Her experience serves her very well, even though I can do without the exagerated drawl her producers get her to use. There is a new lineup in the show, the female guitar player is gone, a female bass player was added along with lead and drums. Who is the other member of Sugarland? Does he write tunes with her? and how long before it is the Jennifer Nettles Show ? Sorry no steel in this act.
Dierkes Bentley was next out of the gate, it was a decent set. There was one close up of Tim Sergents' RAINS pedal steel, but that was as close to hearing it as I got. A couple whines and a slide were all the soundmen could muster out of a dismal house mix. The band came out front for an acoustic number, Tim on the banj0, the only thing I heard him play all night....the 9 note intro to Dueling Banjos'
Entertainer of the year, Kenny Chesney was out next, flying out to the stage from the sound booth on a suspended swing, with a rocking set of the young girls favorite beachin' tunes. His lead player was very good as usual playing those great Les Paul screaming power chords and rock licks that have become Kennys' signature sound. Lots of instrument switching with as many as four guitars going at once. I think he introduced his steel player as Jim Bob Garrett,(my spelling may be incorrect here) and that was about all I heard from Jim Bob as the house mix did not get much cleaner for Kenny's set.
We were on our feet for the entire show mostly because the very young crowd of crushed up straw hat ( mostly on backwards )wearing fans were not sitting down. At last years show, I had the worst tickets, behind the front line, one row down from Jesus, and I spent the entire show looking at the south end of a very big girl who was standing in front of me...and she needed a shower. |

Bo, I think the last line of your post sums up most of Kenny Chesney's fan base. I like my country to be country and aimed at grown ups. Doesn't anybody drink or cheat anymore? Or has life become perfect recently and I missed the memo? |

I've known Jim Bob nearly 30 years and he is an excellent steeler, it's a shame he's not mixed more up-front. |

Jim Bob Gairrett plays a blue Mullen steel guitar. He used to play a red Zum. Jim Bob is a great player! Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10 |

Kenny's lead guitarist is Clayton Mitchell, and his acoustic guitarist Tim Hensley also plays electric guitar, and I've heard he's also a steel player and plays a Zum. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10 |
