Will a master play directly on a standard turntable? Be need to own the master or 'A" master of your favorite LP.

Yes, and if you look closely at the video, you can see there's a tonearm mounted right on the cutting lathe. Of course, "playing" a master repeatedly will degrade it, just like a record. So, normally (after a test listen), they are used only for making the metal (stamping) disc.

The first recording session I did was at Carpenter's Music Store/Studio in Biloxi, Ms in 1960. They made us several 78 rpm copies that were cut with a machine they had at the studio. They played like any other 78.

I have the "test pressing" for the "Martin plays Grammer" 33 1/3 LP That Odell Martin did for the Grammer Guitar Co. It's like any other LP, except just a handwritten label on it.
