Was there a country artist who had a hit with the song "Days of Wine and Roses"? I would imagine there would be some great steel work on that song. If anyone knows who may have recorded it, please let me know. Thanks

A match made in heaven: Days of Wine and Roses + Freddy Fender.

Merle

Once I lived a life of wine and roses and
I drank a lot back then for one concern
Success for me lay just around the corner
I thought my social friends would help me make me turn

But now I'm paying for the days of wine and roses
A victim of the drunken life I chose
Now all my social friends look down their noses
Cause I kept the wine and threw away the rose

I stood by and watched the bottle take control of me
The turn I made was not the one I'd planned
And I watched my social standings slip away from me
While I watched the bottle slowly take command

Now I'm paying for the days of wine and roses
A victim of the drunken life I chose
Now all my social friends look down their noses
Cause I kept the wine and threw away the rose

Uhh, I think I should mention this. The correct title of that song (originally by Merle Haggard) is I Threw Away The Rose.

The song "The Days Of Wine And Roses" is a completely different song, by Henry Mancini, I believe. It was the theme for a 60s movie.

"The Days of Wine and Roses".
It was the theme song to the movie of the same name starring Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. A movie that will haunt me 'till the day I die. The very last scene pulverizes. Very sad...

Yes, this tune became an instant standard in 1962, and we still play it in 2006. Allmusic lists more than 500 recordings! Of all the performers listed there, the name of Freddy Fender jumped out at me as the most horrifying.

Allmusic also lists a song called The Days of Swine and Roses, which I'm searching for.

Yes Ray...that was it! I just checked, and it was written by Mancini and Johnny Mercer. Man, Johnny Mercer has really had a bunch of great hit standards, "Autumn Leaves", "Moon River", "Charade", "Fools Rush In", "Summer Wind", "Dream", and many others. Writers today seldom do lyrics as well as Johnny.

The steel on that Haggard song was really a big inspiration to me when I first started on steel. Ralph Mooney I believe. Kinda brought back memories as I read through the lyrics.

Brings back memories allright... My parents were just splitting up when Merle's version of the tune (I threw away the rose) was new...Now I play country with "real feeling".

I found the recording by Merle. Great steel work on the song. There were other versions by George Jones, Carl Smith and Stonewall Jackson to name a few. Classic country at it's finest with this song. (I Threw Away the Rose)

On the Merle version, was it Ralph Mooney or Norm Hamlet on steel?

On the Merle version it was definetly Mooney.
In fact Mike Headrick has Mooney help him on this song in The Hag Bag.

Doug Jernigan recorded a solo C6th version of The Days of Wine and Roses (Mancini not Haggard) (stunning of course) on the duo LP he did with Bucky Pizzarelli around 1979 on Flying Fish. It might be available as an import on CD.

I bet Curly Chalker would have done a great job on the Mancini/Mercer song. Maybe he did.
I would love to hear a Reese Anderson interpretation. Wouldn't that be something.

Bonnie Owens had some great harmony with Merle on this classic.

I always liked the way Norm Hamlet played this one live.

Right on! One of the first Merle Haggard songs I ever layed ears on and still one of my very favorite country songs... Maybe I like Big City a little better, maybe not.

This has been the most overlook Hag hits when considering tunes for live albums. I'm with Jimmy on Norm Hamlet's live performances of the song. Sure would be nice to get one out on a live CD; don't believe it's on either of the Live at Billy Bob's CD's and I know it wasn't on any of the earlier live albums.

I say we get Hag to re-release "I Threw Away the Rose" and put "Shelly's Winter Love" on the B-side.

There's a good version on the "Slide" CD (First Generation Records FGCD-104 [Pete Drake Prod.]), but since I can't find the damned case, I can't tell you the player! He's one of several top flight guys featured.

Good CD for anyone's shelf, I might add.
