There are a number of fine acoustic Hawaiian guitarists (Ken Emerson, for one) who prefer the sound of the acoustic guitar in Hawaiian playing. If I owned a National tricone, I'd certainly be happy playing Hawaiian music on it!
It really depends on the player and the situation. Jerry Byrd is shown playing a National tricone, a Rickenbacker frying pan, and a Sho-Bud doubleneck on his "Steel Guitar Hawaiian Style" release.
