My son, who is 16 and a high school junior, is looking around at colleges where he can major in music and, potentially, double major (or double-degree) in another field as well (sometimes this takes 5 years instead of 4). He is a very talented alto sax player, both in jazz and in classical repertoire (he is debuting with the local youth orchestra next weekend, playing the 15-minute long Glazunov concerto for alto sax and orchestra). He has also just won a full 5-week scholarship to the Pennsylvania Governors' School summer music program, a highly competitive state-wide program.
So far, we're looking into the following schools. If any of you has personal experience with their music programs, I'd sure appreciate the chance to engage in a direct email correspondence with you about it. (I'm not sure it would be of enough general interest to have the dialog here in this Forum thread.)
The schools we're looking into so far (in no particular order) are:
1. Oberlin College & Conservatory
2. Johns Hopkins Univ & Peabody Conservatory
3. Univ. of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
4. Lawrence University & Conservatory (Appleton, Wisc.)
5. Univ. of Rochester & Eastman School of Music
6. Ithaca College & Conservatory
7. Penn State Univ.
8. SUNY - Fredonia
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We're certainly open to hearing about other programs too, especially if they have a specialist in classical sax, as well as a strong jazz program.
Thanks in advance for any input, suggestions, etc.
If you're looking for a strong Jazz program, you definitely should research the University of North Texas in Denton, TX.
Thanks, Michael. Yes, I'm very aware of their jazz program, but not much aware of their classical stuff. Do you know anything about that aspect? Jazz will not be enough in this case.
I know several grads of Texas Tech in Lubbock Tx. They all sing the praises of the well rounded program and the student has the freedom to specialize in any field. CC |
