Group,
I picked up a 1951 Fender Custom S8 recently. You can click on the link below to have a look. I have a question about string spacing on these instruments. The spacing is inconsistent across the nut ranging from 9/32 to 11/32 . The pan is in really excellent condition so this appears to be a manufacturing error (the notches were not cut at consistent intervals). It's really not that noticeable when I play the instrument but it looks kinda wierd. My luthier picked up on it immediately. Has anyone else observed this on early Customs and can anyone suggest a fix ??

These instruments are actually called Deluxe 8's. The double-neck version of the same is the Dual Professional, and the Custom has three necks. I have a 1954 Deluxe, and have owned a Custom before. On both instruments, the string spacing has been pretty consistent, except for a gap maybe 1/32" wider between the 4th and 5th strings - hardly noticeable, and certainly not enough to affect the playability. I have a late 'sixties Gibson Century, with the original nut, on which the spacing between the bottom three strings is almost 1/8" wider than between the other strings. I'm not sure what the thinking behind that was, but I found it disconcerting and had a luthier change it. |

| Hello Marc. If it's the larger gap between the 4th and 5th string you're concerned about you might try stringing the 4th string on the on the 5th tuner and the 5th string on the 4th tuner. I haven't tried this, but if you pinch the two strings together behind the nut you'll see what kind of directional(?) tension is required to correct this nut - notch flaw. Great guitar! |
