Yes, they are compressed WAV files which makes them smaller than an equivalent MP3. The high frequency cutoff is 5kHz. Anyone who needs to hear above that can hear as well as a cat.

They are HIGHLY compressed.

Is compression the reason they sound like they do? I've always thought that wav are full size full quality sounds.
Why not mp3 them instead? Wouldn't that sound better?
