Have any of you learned gentlemen, or ladies, tried Scruggs tuners, from 5-string banjos, on your lap steels? If so, with what results? It would seem to be a quick and accurate way to change tunings. |

Sounds like a great idea Charlie! Could probably work on Dobro as well. For the "G" tuning the tuners in tight position. When released the tuning would drop to "D".
I can just hear "Home Sweet Home" now.
There are lots of options for other tunings as well as you so indicate.
Regards neighbour. Glad you are making it thru the winter. |

I had a 1/2 step Scruggs tuner on the 5th string of a dobro once. Tuned GBDGBD low to high...I used it to run the 5th up to a C in the bass. Gave a nice bass line to the IV chord.
When you get your Scruggs tuners, they come in two flavors...one is for changing 1/2 step or so, the other is for changing a whole step or so...you can tell which is which by the size of the post...I got mine from a fellow who had a couple of non-matching ones sitting in a box of parts. They are pricey if you are getting a new, matched set...
Good luck

Thanks for the info Tab, I'll keep it in mind . I think what would really like to find is a few of the old "cam-style" -- some very good banjo players have told me that they are alot less hastle and work alot better, if you don't mind drilling the extra holes in the peg-head. As you can see, I'm still exploring options. Thank again! |

Ha! I've had 2 Scruggs tuners for years just waitng for me to get the guts to put them on my old Dickerson.....I doubt if I ever will though. It's just too clean of an axe. Even if it would make it a lot more versatile instrument. I'm still fixin to maybe start thinkin' about kinda doing it....sorta. |

Hipshot makes a gadget like that for lap steel called the Trilogy bridge. You can alter the tuning of any or all strings with little levers which each have 3 tunable positions - giving you some preposterous number of possible tunings. |

I just received a Trilogy bridge, - I'm going to try it and see what's up. It's a cool idea. The 8 cams give you three adjustable tunings per string. They adjust downward from zero position. I'm going to mount it on one of the guitars I'm building. I'll know more in a few weeks I hope. Have to build a guitar around this thing I think. Will be fun.
