I have been looking around for something like that for quite sometime:

The German Terratec Company now has a little pre-amp available that plugs right into your USB connection and your turntable, it is called "Phono PreAmp USB". You can record vinyl records (but also old cassette tapes) directly to PC now. Included is a software called "SoundRescue" that allows to correct bad tonal quality of old records. I just tried it and it works great! The result is a .wav file that can be played on PC, burned on CD, or changed into an MP3 format.

Here is the link to the company:

This looks real interesting, but I don't see any US distribution at all. I assume they must have the RIAA equalization built into their device. It's not difficult to record through a decent soundcard, often with freely obtained software. However, I find the results somewhat marginal because of the need for that special EQ.

Dave,

The device works easily through the USB port, not even extra power connection is needed. The "SoundRescue" software has a built in equalizer and also some neat tools like a DeNoiser and a DeScratcher, with amazing results. You can even listen to the difference before and after...

May be you could send an e-mail to them to find out if it is compatible with U.S. standards and availability for U.S. delivery.

Kind Regards, Walter

If the RIAA preamp is all you need, you can buy one at Radio Shack. Why buy more hardware, etc when all you need is one item. Most modern sound cards are at least 16 bit audio (some are more) as 16 bit audio is all CD's (including commercial CD's) are.

I have a preamp interface called the Presonus Inspire that has a stereo phono input on the back. I can just run albums into the recording software on my Mac. I don't bother, though, 'cause my turntable is set up and I just play the records on that. I love the sound of vinyl.

It also takes a -10db consumer line level from tape decks etc, but NOTE, the cartridge input is for MAGNETIC cartridge ONLY..
BTW Made by Terratec, my Axon AX 100 Mk 11 is the best guitar to Midi that I've ever used..
