Cool!
In the Chet Atkins books that are out he talks about rooming with Jethro and how they would work on the Django stuff. Those guys could really play! |

Loved it. But when I pulled it up, the clip played for about 5 seconds, quit then came back on again for about 5 seconds. It kept doing that right to the end. Strange. |

George,
On occasion,I've had the same "problem". What's happenning is,its downloading. What I did was,let it "cycle" itself one time through. Then, hit the "replay" icon. It should, then, play normally. Hope this helps.

Great clip. I once worked on a touring show that included H&J, and had the privilege of hearing them play those jazz improvisations during hotel room jam sessions after the shows. Their talent was humbling! |

This stuff's on a slow server. When it starts to play, use the "pause" button to stop the playing while the video loads. When it gets almost to the end, then hit "play".
Homer and Jethro were two of he most fantastic musicians I ever saw. They played almost like it was second-nature, and they'd been born with the instruments in their hands. There's an out of print album I used to have called "Playing It Straight", where they left out the cornball stuff and just played their butts off! If you ever see it...GRAB IT! It's the most impressive display of jazzy mando and rhythm playing you'll ever hear. |

I'll second Donny's recommendation for "Playing It Straight". Our fiddle player gave me the CD and it's been on my iPod ever since. I also recommend Jazz From The Hills, featuring H&J, Chet Atkins, fiddler Dale Potter, and SomeGuyNamedJerryByrd.
Jethro truly was a world-class instrumentalist. You get a small taste of that talent in the video clip. Thanks for the link, Andy. |

Homer & Jethro's two non-comedy, swing jazz LPs, It Ain't Necessarily Square and Playin' it Straight were released together on a Japanese CD in the late 90s. It's out of print now but, as Donny says, well worth snagging if you can find it. [This message was edited by Andy Volk on 22 February 2006 at 05:55 AM.] |

Sorry, forgot to add that Swing Low, Sweet Mandolin is another of Jethro's instrumental efforts featuring nothing but jazz standards. Just Jethro and a guitar player.
Then there's 4 Giants of Swing, featuring a cast of somewhat adequate players: Eldon Shamblin, Joe Venuti, Jethro Burns, and (gulp) Curly Chalker. Lots of Ellington and Gershwin.
So you can see that Jethro kept pretty good company when he wasn't with Homer |

I have that CD, (the liner notes are all in Japanese with no english translation) and can clone it if anybody wants a copy. I wouldn't do it if it was still available, but since it's out of print I don't mind.
BTW, there's a newly released CD of Jethro and fellow jazz mandolinst Tiny Moore, called "back To back." I haven't got it yet, but it's supposed to be very hot.

Thanks for the link, Andy. Jethro's solo on that is fantastic!
I can vouch for the "Back to Back" album (reissued on David Grisman's Acoustic Disc) as being excellent. A not-too-shabby rhythm section of Ray Brown and Shelly Manne!
Also, Tiny Moore is on many of the Bob Wills "Tiffany Transcriptions", which features the band really rippin' it up; also Herb Remington and Noel Boggs, Junior Barnard...I hope someone puts out a boxed set of those at some point! Some of the greatest playing this side of the Time Warp Tophands.

Ditto on Back To Back. Disc #1 is the original LP from about 1980. Disc #2 is all previously unreleased alternate takes. |
