I think they should have called it a "sheet metal guitar" not a steel guitar.

That's cool. I use to know this group in Boston (actually Cambridge) called the Steel Cello Ensemble. They plucked and bowed wires hung from the ceiling, a big harp made from metal rods of different lengths, a big piece of sheet metal played sort of like a musical saw, etc. Their music was eery, but could be musical and beautiful.

I remember the Steel Cello Emsemble.
Pretty interesting group.
No else one even slightly comes to mind,
except Chaz's unique creations.

All-in all, it could/should be considered a proto-type, because; undoubtedly it could be redesigned to look as good as it sounds!
