I heard an interesting interview the other evening with country singer, Joel Nickoels and they played some cuts off of his new album entitled "III." I am sure some may take exception to my position this recording project, but personally I found it to be one of the best recording projects I have heard from one of the newer country artists. He's even got a cut of the Gene Watson hit, "Should I Go Home." Judging it on five stars I would definitely give it 4 and 3/4 stars. It has to be by Ray Price, Merle Haggard or George Jones to get a five star rating out of me. [This message was edited by Kenny Burford on 03 November 2005 at 12:07 AM.] |

The steel players on the project include: Dan Dugmore, Paul Franklin, Robby Turner, Terry Crisp, and Al Perkins. There's only one song on the entire project that doesn't have a steel guitar "Honky Tonk Girl," which is surprising when considering the song's title. My personal favorite on the project is "Just A Little More." It will never make it to the radio, but that in itself is a testiment to the quality of the song. I sure hope this young man can hold on to his recording contract, his singing and songwriting sound promising. [This message was edited by Kenny Burford on 03 November 2005 at 08:05 AM.] |

Joe Nichols is, in my opinion, one of the best singers in country music for many years.
His first CD is a gem. The second had some high spots, but I thought the material wasn't quite as good as on the first. I'm delighted to learn that he has a new one; I could listen to him sing all day.

I too just got this and love it. Joe's other two cd's are great too. One thing scares me a little though. Joe's first 2 cd's were produced by Brent Rowan who I think did a great job. But I heard on GAC last week that the second didn't sell as well as the first. Then I noticed the new album has 3 different producers. I wonder if they are trying to fool with Joe's sound and commercialize him more to sell more cds. Anybody know anything about this? |

Yes,
I hope he starts selling more cd's!
His voice reminds me of Merle.
I noticed yesterday Media Play has it for $8.99 |

Right off of the top of my head I don't remember who the third producer was on the album, but the first song on the album was produced by Buddy Cannon. I think Cannon's production credits in country music speak for themselves. I think he was VP of Mercury/Polydor in the 90s for a time and has produced a ton of great country recording projects. I used to see recording projects on Mecury/Polydor with him and Norro Wilson sharing producer credits. I am not sure why either were brought in for the project, but the songs they produced were marked with asterisks. |

Sounds like a good grab for my Saturday road trip to Lexington for the Central KY Steel Guitar Extravaganza.

I heard Joe say, in an interview, that he was going through a tough time during the second album, and he thinks it's reflected in the song selection, which is maybe not up to par. He thinks "III" is more akin to his first effort.
His first album blew me away, second was disappointing. Hard to live up to a first album like that, though.
If we get a few more Joe Nichols and Brad Paisleys around, country music may just pull out of this little funk its been in.[This message was edited by Ben Slaughter on 04 November 2005 at 02:18 PM.] |

I agree with you, Ben.
I'm listening to '111' as I write this - this is (so far) as good as his first! Maybe I should post and review later.
I just love this guy's voice! (Did I say that already...?)
