After we spent a week in Nashville my girlfriend has been dreaming of learning to play some "oldtime" and bluegrass fiddle, and I am planning on buying her a basic fiddle so she'll find out if she could handle it.. I have'nt got the first clue on on what kind of fiddle to buy.. I see some chinese and other asian products on Ebay and in the stores here in Norway, but from my experience with guitars, I guess a a used well set up "players" instrument is the way to go. I have read that for this kind of music the quality of wood etc. don't have to be like the more expensive classical violins, so I'll guess a not to expensive well adjusted "starter" or a semivintage is what I'm looking for… I know a some of you US steelers double on fiddle so I am wondering if you have some pointers on what to buy (maybe some of you have one for sale?) and what the best learning material is?

All help is warmly apreciated!

This is a topic that gets discussed fairly often on fiddleforum.com, and on maestronet.com. Sharmusic.com is the site of a respected violin store; one of their begginers outfits would be fine. Some of those Chineese fiddles are not very well made - crooked necks etc.

Brands, rather builders, of fiddles are numerous. $500 - 1000 for one that doesn't suck. Pernambuco wood or fiber bow $200.

To save money, try garage sales, flea markets or your Norwegian equivlaent. Take a friend who plays so you won't buy garbage.

Good luck.
