I have always wondered why Reagan gave a pardon to Merle Haggard. I sure am glad he did and what Merle has done with his career has been great.

Here's the explanation, straight from The Hag himself:

Quote:
There was some effort on my brother-in-law's part, who was part of the Reagan team when he was on the West Coast, and my brother-in-law was friends with [Reagan adviser] Michael Deaver and people who were in a position to examine my case, and they found that I was improperly convicted and had no representation because I was poor and things of that nature, and ... 12 Supreme Court judges and Ronald Reagan -- the governor -- found it right to pardon me.

The above quote is from cmt.com, and "the rest of the story" can be found there, too.

This is besides the point, but I watched an old John Wayne movie last night and Merle Haggard sang a background song in the movie. He was in the credits at the beginning of the DVD.

Erv,

What was the Duke movie you watched? I like to buy old movies on DVD and bet I don't have that one.

It was "Chisholm" or something like that. It was about the war in Lincoln County, New Mexico betwenn the cattle people at the time. I did a search on the internet for Lincoln County, NM and quite a bit of the stuff in the movie was factual, including the stuff about Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett. I love the old western movies.
