I was visiting a friend this week, and he played this recording for me. I just sat there completely transfixed. Amazing.
Is anyone familiar with how he did it ? Was the music transposed for the instrument (double bass), or did he use some wacky tuning ?
I think my friend expected that I'd just want to hear a small sound byte.... 20 minutes later I was still sitting there like a statue, listening in a state of shock.

John, I have not heard the recording you refer to nor do I have any idea about how it was accomplished, just wanted to say Thanks for the heads-up. I think Edgar Meyer is an amazing musician and I absolutely will be on the lookout for this recording. |

If Meyer tuned higher and in fifths, then I call it a cello, not a bass!
Last year I heard the last solo violin suite (Partita in E) on the radio, played on the bass! It was transposed to G. |

He may have retuned to 5ths, but he also is a master of playing HIGH up the neck with perfect intonation.
I have one of his solo labums, but don't remember this Bach, and it's packed so I can't check.
Actually for most concert level classical bassists working on cello music is your daily practice.
When you go back to bass charts they seem simple.
I have never seen him live, it's on my list,
but I am not suprised at the size comments.
HE PLAYS like he is bigger than normal.
VERY strong.

Back about 1984, I went to a jam in Nashville and there was an amazing bassist who played all the fiddle tunes up the neck in tune in the fiddle register...it was the first I'd heard of Edgar, and I thought "we'll be hearing from this guy..."

Thank you for the comments, all. Fascinating fellow.
b0b, when you get that recording, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion of it. You are much more a student of classical music than I, but I think it's great.

Edgar entered a fiddle contest in Aspen,CO when he was living out there quite a few years ago. A friend of mine was a judge in the contest. He said that Edgar was amazing and they would have given him the 1st place prize but thought that it would have caused an outrage, so he was awarded 3rd place! I'm listening to it right now, and I feel a bit like I felt when I first heard Jaco play.
(...that'd be thrilled, delighted, embarassed and depressed all at once. ) |
