Hi All,

I am new to the forum and haven't played steel for years - read YEARS. I have obtained an old dbl 8 that I hope to put into service again soon.

So...

The post regarding 'Teach Your Children' - along with some other posts I've seen - makes me ask the following question.

It seems that many steel players wish to recreate a specific solo rather than making their own arrangement. Is this true, or am I wrong?

I play guitar and a few other things, and I've never tried to do 'note-for-note' stuff, even if I could. I play by ear and just prefer to play what I like. I think any non-pedal-er could play a very nice arrangement of the CSNY classic with no need what-so-ever to copy Jerry's version exactly.

What say you all on this issue?

J

You should make a distinction between learning a solo note for note and learning the song properly. Certain phrases and notes are part of the song being played. It would be ridiculous to do a version of "Redneck Friend" which is faithful to Jackson Browne's version without playing the melody that David Lindley played on his lap steel (even if you do the song as a banjo quartet!).
I don't think I ever try to consciously play the same solo note for note, but I do try to play the parts as they were written if the song calls for it.
