I was playing some older video tapes to see what was on them and came across a couple of shows from the Nashville Network. One of them was Mel Tillis and he had this little guy playing a strat with a thumbpick named Bobby Whitten. I'm not sure if that's the way you spell his last name but this guy was awesome. What a helluva picker! What's the history of this dude? Does he have any solo recordings out or any backing vocalists which might be good to buy. I was very impressed by his playing and it seems like he should be better known than he obviously is....Have a good 'un..JH

He is still picking with Mel last I heard. He is living in Louisiana somewhere now, and is a great guitar player and a heck of a nice fellow. He has been playing a Steinberger for quite awhile now. Others on here know him better than I do, I've only met him in the past year and have had the good fortune to pick with him on a few gigs. I know he spent many years on the road with George and Tammy. |

I have known Bobby since he came to town in the early 70's...don't remember the year. He is from Texas, the Waco area if I'm not mistaken. I can't say that I remember him ever playing with George and Tammy, but he did work for Jack Green for years. He quit playing for a while and drove a bus. He just recently went back to work for Mel. I haven't seen Bobby in some time but we were good friends years ago. I'd like to see him again someday...and your right, he is a fantastic musician. |

Yeah Earl, he's hot!! He did a little intro thing on one tune that was reminicent of Electrified Jerry Reed in overdrive that made my jaw drop to the floor. The guy's a monster picker if there ever was one...JH

I have it on good authority that he shows up over in Granger Texas about every two weeks or so and plays his butt off with all the good ole boys at the the Cottonclub. They can't hardly play either. Population of Granger 250 or close to that.

Yes, one of my absolute favorite guitarists from the "road bands" of the 70s, along with the great Earl Erb, Steve Chapman, "the other" Jerry Reid, Gregg Galbraith and a few others! |

You are right about Bobby coming to Granger, although it is not every other week, it is unfortunately less frequent than that. Here is a fairly recent photo of him playing there at the club. He is the fellow upper left playing the headless guitar. I've been the guitar player on doing the Sunday jams for the past year there, and it is a treat when Bobby comes down and we get to pick together. He is amazing. Double stops up and down the neck, mind boggling. I hope the address for the website comes out, I don't know much about posting that sort of stuff on this forum, so pardon me if it doesn't work right.

Also, maybe it wasnt' George and Tammy, but I thought I saw some old photos of him in Tammys band. Maybe it was just with her. The Jack Greene part is right too, I remember that, as well as he driving bus for lots of acts too.[This message was edited by Jim Lutz on 12 February 2005 at 11:20 AM.] |
