OK, there's been some things going on in the boo-wah button thread that I wanted to split out into a new topic.
I make custom fuzz-tones for guitar, and I've been working on adapting them to lap steel. I offer 2 models right now, one's more an overdrive, the other's more of a fuzz. What kinds of distortion, effects, etc. are you guys interested in for lap steel? Lap steelers generally don't use reverb like the pedal guys, and are not afraid to get dirty.
Let me know

Matt,
I have one of the original Fulltone 1 pedals that I bought from Mike Fuller right around the time he switched over to the Fulltone 2. I love this thing for overdriven lap steel!
BTW, I see on your website that you made a pedal for Jimmy Lavender. FYI I'll be playing pedal steel with Thad Cockrell and the Starlite Country Band opening a Cigar Store Indians show on either the 19th or 27th of Jan. at Humble Pie (downtown Raleigh) Date yet to be decided by the club. Be sure and say hi if you're out at that show.

Cliff, I'll bring down some pedals for you to try at that show, I'll definitely be there.
I like the Full-Drive 1 better, too, but it's not as versatile as the 2.

Hi Pharoh,
I have to differ with you on this one. You mentioned that Lap steelers generally don't use reverb like the pedal guys. Many Hawaiian players like myself do use reverb to fatten up the sound.
What would be nice is if you could build a Sustain pedal that sustains without adding distortion.

Fair enough. I use a good bit of reverb and delay on my PSG, but I play my lap steel straight thru my 1960 Silvertone Organ amp (1 6V6, 12" speaker!) I will put in a plug for the Danelectro Surf&Turf Compressor, which sounds a lot like an MXR Dyna-Comp or the old red Ross compressor. I mainly do older-style stuff, germanium fuzz, things like that, you know, and I really don't use ICs. That Dano compressor should be available just about anywhere for $30-$40 and it sounds great.

I'm currently using a Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive, a Boss PH-2 Super Phaser, and/or a Boss CE-2 Chorus through my Pro Junior. I would like to try out the Fulltone pedals, but I'm a cheap guy.
If I had a good delay/reverb pedal, I'd use that as well. I'm a big fan of effects when used in the proper spot. I'd love to get that Hammond B-3 sound as well.

I use a Morley JD-10 for overdrive -- very versatile (it's also a line level booster/buffer, so I can go straight into a mixing board with no problem). OCcasionally, for fun, I'll use a DOD Envelope Filter for an auto-wah effect. I haven't tried chorus yet, though I use one on banjo, so I guess I'll need to give it a shot, Brad. And yes, I use a touch of reverb on my Music Man combo, just cause it sounds good with the other instruments in the band. |
