I was idly viewing Elderlys site when I came upon http://www.elderly.com/vintage/items/30U-12097.htm. It seems a younger relative took a sander to a mint 56 Strat. Our goverment tells us we can't smack kids here in the UK. What would you have done to this guy if the Strat was yours?

Obviously the kid was a SRV wannabe, to the Nth degree! Isn't it interesting that the sanded guitar is STILL nearly 10 grand more than the refinished '58(?) below it? THOUSANDS??? for PAINT???? If I ever get rich, I'm gonna buy a sunburst '59 Les Paul, put a Floyd Rose on it, take out that STUPID humbucker at the bridge, and put in a single-coil off a Jap Strat, then get drunk and paint the whole thing with grey primer, using one of Tony Prior's old Foghat t-shirts for a paint brush! Put it up for sale for 100K, and I'll sell it within 2 days. COLLECTORS !!!

I guess they figure that what finish is still left on it is "original"...

Kids. (Now we now why spiders eat their young. )

But, according to "the book" that would probably still rate a 20%-30% condition appraisal, and as such would bring about 4 grand, tops.

In about 1957, my dad bought me a Les Paul goldtop, with an amp.

In collage, 1961, I traded it for a Fender Jazzmaster to the bassplayer in our new band. The jazzmaster was all the hot rage then.

He was going to repaint it and I helped him tear it down. Behind where the neck bolts on there was a date from the 1950's, when it was made I guess.

We laughed then at this old guitar, I cry now at what I gave away.

I see the serial # 14,ooo something. I bought a new strat I thought in 56, which I still have. It's got a 10,000 something serial #. Now I'm wondering just what year it is. Maybe it was in the store for a while before I bought it. It was pretty scratched up in later years from playing 5-6 nights a week for several years, so I had it painted way back. Probably ruined a lot of value on it, but back then they were so plentiful, you did'nt think that much about redoing something on them. I think I bought it new for $356.00 Doyle

I have an idle confession -

I've always loved music instruments. At the age of 4 I was so enamored with my father's saxophone that I pledged to myself to make sure it was always super-shiny.

So - I went to the garage, got some sandpaper and started shining !

Needless to say - I wasn't too anxious to tell anybody about it. I'm now 35 and about a month ago - I finally told my dad, and we had a good laugh.
