I usually don't gripe, but this kind of gets to me. My wife went to see Dolly Parton last night...TEN (10) musicians on stage and NO STEEL PLAYER.
I stayed home with the baby and I'm glad I did. |

But she had a dobro, right??
She has turned bluegrass, and is doing it great.
I guess she does some of the old songs,
but is concentrating on the current music. Which I love. |

David - I don't know if she had Dobro or not - I'll have to check with the wife and see. |

Immediately, I can't remember any of Dolly's songs that even had a steel! We'll just put her in the same category with Sonny James, Leroy Van Dyke, Johnny Cash, Bobby Goldsboro, Johnny Horton, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Alabama, Restless Heart, Boxcar Willie, Diamond Rio, The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band, The Mavericks, The Gatlin Bros., Barbara Mandrell (Oops, she did have one song with steel), Travis Tritt, Claude King, Skip Ewing, etc., etc., etc..
Lotsa them "country singers" don't care much for steel guitar...makes 'em sound too "country"! ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/wink.gif) |

This is downright amazing. I understand that Don Warden is her manager, the man that played steel with Porter Wagoner. She has a steel player for a manager but no steel on records or no steel in live performances. Something is wrong with this picture, it is out of focus. |

Rob Ickes played Dobro in her band for a while, I don't know if he still does or not. He is a monster Dobro player. One of his albums is all Jazz, played on a Dobro, and he does it up right.

Jody,
I think Randy Kohrs is playing with Dolly at the moment - he is a great Dobro player!
Donny,
Especially in her earlier recordings (before she went "Pop", Dolly used a lot of Steel on her recordings for Monument and RCA (Lloyd Green and Pete Drake).
Also, your list of names of singers who hardly ever used steel mentions Boxcar Willie - he used a lot of steel on his recordings (Jim Vest, Weldon Myrick), also Harlan Powell played on stage with him.
And what about those great TE Ford recordings with Speedy?
Kind Regards, Walter

The great Bobby Garrett was with Boxcar in Branson for quite some time. [This message was edited by Bob Tuttle on 07 December 2004 at 12:18 PM.] |

Actually, I admire anyone who can sing with a steel guitar playing alone behind them. Occasionally I tried singing a song with someone playing steel, and I always found my voice going right along with the various pedal-changes, which is FUNNY, EMBARASSING, NUTTY, and on and on! If the steel-player plays with feeling, you're in for a musical-treat, to say the least!
