Is it just me or is it really a little disconcerting to hear Jefferson Airplane's
"Volunteers" over an E-Trade brokerage commercial? At the least, I would think that song could be called "anti-brokerage".

Along thee same lines, I think it's strange to hear Led Zeppelin tunes behind car commercials.

I'm reminded of an interview with Grace Slick where she was questioned about the change from the Airplane to the Starship. She explained that she felt hypocritical performing "Volunteers" and simultaneously complaining about the rising cost of Dom Perignon.

Hey CB! Your picks are en route.

It's the companies that own the commercial control of these songs that are doing this - they'll sell anything to anybody. I doubt the artists can do anything, and they are lucky if they get a cut in the royalties. The product companies who buy these adds, the ad people who make them, and the music companies who provide the material are all either complete idiots who don't have a clue what the songs mean, or completely evil and hypocritical. Sort of reminds one of the current election in progress. We live in the times of the big sell.

I recently attended the funeral of a former musical associate and had the opportunity to visit with one of the 1960's artists that I had been associated with during that era.

He recorded several albums during his performing days, and later recorded "historical" albums for a University performing arts program, and other work.

He told me that he could log-on to any search engine on the internet and find his work being sold.....but he doesn't receive royalties for any of them. I know that many artists lack of acumen concerning business affairs early in their career returns to haunt them in later years....but, it ain't fair!

Makes you long for the good old days, when bands were pushing pot, LSD, free love and violent revolution....

Years ago I heard Hot Tuna's song "Letter To The North Star" on a TV commercial for a carpet wholesaler. You know the kind..."Operators on duty, call know" and it's 3:00 in the morning....

Keep on pickin'!

Not to start another Jerry Garcia thread, but he played steel on Volunteers. Did they use the track he played on?

Nate,

They only used the first 3 or 4 lines from the song but I don't remember any steel.
