For a starter 8-string, I think it would be fine. I've got a Melobar Tomohawk, which is a student (or economy) model 8-string. I think it's fine. The melobar costs a little more.

I had a 6 string Morrell that I had gotten for right around $100. Worked fine for learning, but has limitations, in terms of sound quality and sustain. I eventually got rid of it...but then I bought another budget 6-stringer to try different tunings. The morrell, ironically enough, was a little better. Should've kept it.

Whether or not you want to buy it may depend on what you are gonna use it for. For experimenting/learning, or to have something around to try out different tunings without having to use your main guitar, it may be a good thing to buy. If you do get it, and you get serious about playing, know that you will need a better guitar down the line.

...just my opinion, for what it's worth.

Check in Flattes and Sharpes (way N on Sheridan). He's got some lovely laps, maybe for sale(?) If they're not, he might be able to head you towards one. I got a real nice 10 string Gibson lap in a Music Go Round for a good price, so keep looking and you should get lucky

Yikes, I didn't have that kind of problem with my 6-string morrell. Mine worked fine, it just didn't have the tone or sustain of a better quality instrument.
