I posted this over in computers, but thought I'd put it here in case more folks could see it:
My music collection has grown to the point where I really don't know what I have anymore. So, I need to catalog my entire music collection (CDs, LPs, Tapes, etc). What's the best method to do this?
I have found on-line cataloging software for purchase which can do this http://www.collectorz.com/music/ ; however, I know Microsoft Access (which I already have) can do the same thing.
The only problem I see with Access is there is no direct CD recognition. In other words, I'd have to type in all the CD info, instead of the software recognizing the disc and pre-filling the fields for me. Is it possible for Microsoft Access to connect on-line with a CD database to save me from typing a lot of info?
My main dilemma is that I have a lot of "Various Artists" CD's. If I type “Various” under the “Artist” field, I would need an additional "Artist" field next to the "song title" field, to account for the individual artists on those cuts. And when I search for a particular "artist", I would need the software program to cross-reference both artist fields (primary and sub-artist), to find all the recordings.
I would appreciate any tips and help if anyone else out there has also cataloged their music collection.
Thanks!

Jeff, I had the same problem (i recognized it first when I ordered records and found out that I already have them in my collection!), so I started a simple MS Works database some years ago. I still use it, because since I created it, it has exactly the fields that I want. At the moment I am working with two databases:
1) The record database, this one has all records in it (plus label, tracks and musicians)
2) The song database. This one has the song, the writer and all records the song is on
Whenever I get a new record, I immediately add it to the fatabase (which takes only a few minutes). I admit, though, that it was time consuming to start it first.
I tried some of the software that's available for categorizing, but it never really worked to shift the info from old to new, also the online input didn't really work, you can only do this with CDs, only if they have that feature available. Many of the small label CDs or private pressings don't have that, so I had to stick to the good old manual inputting anyway.
If you are interested, drop me a line, so we can talk about it further.
Kind Regards, Walter
