Honest, this was the first time I've hear Buddy Jewel sing. I can't say much more than that. |

Charles, I guess you don't get out much or turn the radio on much.
Buddy Jewel has been all over the radio charts for a year now ever since he won the Nashville Star contest back in 03..
Excellent singer, excellent CD.
This boy has paid his dues and has now collected.
I heard that CD #2 is due out fairly soon as well..
Forum member Dave Ristrum plays on the road with Buddy, actually Dave played on the TV show too..a very fine player indeed..

Tony, actually I get out quite often but the only radio I listen to is our Mississippi talk radio. I used to listen to the Road Gang when I was traveling late at nite. I don't have enough patiece to listen to FM radio.
I saw the ads on tv for the Nashville Star contest but never had any desire to watch it. I tuned in to the Opry out of curosity to see what the big buzz was with Buddy and because I like Patty.
The first thing I noticed was the long rider coat, then the hat and lastly the latest facial hair craze he was sporting. As tempting as it was to change channels I decided to take a listen regardless of his same ole fashion statement.
The first two songs were pretty much what I expected. Personally I thought they were lame to say the least. Then he did "He'll have to go" The steel player sounded good on this although he didn't have much to work with on the first two. I thought he did an ok job with the Jim Reeve's song but I wouldn't say he was an Excellent singer by no stretch of the imagination, just ok.
There are a lot of people who have paid their dues, a lot better some worst than Buddy. So paying dues don't amount to much. Other than making you old way before your time.
Everyone is entitled to their likes and dislikes. My personal opinion of Buddy is he's just ok, not much more. Definately not an excellent singer. I'd have to hear him sing something more substantial than the two songs he sang on the Opry.
I would say someone like Tim O'Brien is a very very good singer but not excellent. Well almost.[This message was edited by Charles French on 04 August 2004 at 06:20 AM.] |

I think Buddy is indeed an excellent singer that has paid his dues. How often do we hear he or she hasn't paid their dues?
Who is Tim? |

That's why you think Buddy is an excellent singer. You've never heard one.

Charles,
We know you don't care for Buddy Jewel, so please tell us the singers you consider to be excellent. That would give me a better idea as to where you are coming from in your opinions.
It's always interesting to hear the many varied opinions among people regarding their musical preferences.

Les, I never used the word excellent to describe anyone. If I did they wouldn't be just mediocre. Excellent is a tall order to fill. I think one reason the RR thread is so heated is the assumption of some that he is an excellent player. People tend to use the word quite loosely in referring to someone's playing or vocal abilities. So I won't go into naming all the singer's I would consider as very good, altho I think I did reference one already. That should be enough to get an idea of where I'm coming from.
cheers,
Charles |

Buddy Jewel is country to the core.
His recently recorded Sony CD, not yet released, has Lloyd Green on steel. That's one to look froward to. |

I'm not a big Buddy Jewell fan, but I'd rate him way ahead of the [Tim,Toby,Cheesy] Clan as a singer, He dresses much better than most, seems & acts like a nice person, has a sharp lookin gal Fiddler, a nice Steeler, & he dont wear no holes, I think he deserves some wholesome credit! Anyone agree? kr [This message was edited by kyle reid on 05 August 2004 at 06:41 PM.] |

Superlatives do get tossed around indiscriminately - in my opinion, the best that can be said for Jewel is that he has an inoffensive voice. The fact he, or his producer, have chosen to tread a fairly traditional path doesn't redeem him as a singer.
'Excellent' singers in today's country field would include Joe Nichols and Alison Krauss, surely? These are the cream of the crop in terms of technique, but, sadly, that isn't saying much! Alan Jackson remains staunchly traditional in his approach, AND gives Paul and Brent lots of solos ( ), but I still find his voice lacks any real quality; he was really exposed once or twice on the Christmas Special he did when the material demanded a little more than he was used to dealing with.
I still think that, in this genre, George Jones remains unsurpassed - great 'chops'!

Well it wouldn't hurt to add a bit to Buddy's defense, not that he needs it.
He was a demo singer in Nville for the best part of 10 or 15 years.Turned down by many labels along the way.
He survived a TV show where he had to sing live for many weeks in a row and he came out the clear winner over several who also were pretty good.
He writes..and very well. His 1st Sony single , Lacey's Song, was self written .His CD has several self written tunes.
His first CD went Platinum.
He has a very laid back personality..easy going, NON Starish..
When we saw and met Buddy in Charlotte lsat year he was very approachable and very grateful for his "Late" career. easy going, easy to talk to.
He sang great..
We happen to think he is pretty darn good in our house. His first CD is really quite good, several excellent tunes.
In the words of Dave Ristrum, Forum member and Steeler in Buddy's band..
"Buddy is the real deal"..thats what he told me when I met him at 3rd and Lindlys back in March.
Every performer sings a few duds on the Opry now and then. And the Opry has a few Duds performing on the show now and then too..Buddy's not one of the duds..
Charles, I would just say that if you are only listening to music on the radio now and then and watch the Opry every now and then your reference might be a bit skewed...give it another chance, maybe even give Buddy's 1st CD a shot..you may just be suprised at what ya hear..
Is he the best thing to come around since sliced bread ? Of course not..but he is a very welcome alternative to the nonsense family of big hat singers and "let me show you my muscles"..
Good Country Music, Good Steel playin' and good Tele' and Fiddlin'..all on one CD..imagine that...

Well you know what they say about opinions. Everybody has one. If I had to give one about Buddy Jewell I would say my opinions in my collection rack.I bought the CD one of three last year.Buddy can't spend opinions however he can spend the money his succesful career will earn him. Whether I like or dislike a particular artist who has made it to where 99%of us would donate a testicle to be. Putting others down never elevates ones stature.

Well said Joe. I only bought two CD's last year. one was Yo Yo Ma and the other a pop country band that I won't even mention here. I wouldn't have time to douse all of the flames

Hope to give him a listen & maybe meet forum member Dave Ristrum. Tell them to bring cold weather gear. Tonite it's supposed to be in the upper 30's to lower 40's (first week of August???). |

C. Dixon, that's the only reason I checked this out, beins' Buddy Emmons is the Chet Atkins of the Steel Guitar, in my opinion. I don't know how to say it any different. Nobody else even comes close |
