RE: "The Pilgrim" by Marty Stuart
Release date: June 15, 1999
I pulled this CD out after not having listened to it in a while. Man, it still knocks me out! I bought it when it was originally released and I have to say it holds up quite well. It remains one of my favorite CD's.
This is one of those CD's that requires the time to set and listen to it all the way through because it tells a story beautifully. The music throughout is of the highest caliber and the songwriting is stellar... But the thing I enjoy most is getting to listen to the late great Gary Hogue play steel like it was meant to be played - From uptempo honky tonkers like "Red, Red Wine and Cheatin' Songs" to ballads like "Reasons" that will make you shed a tears, it just can't be done any better that Gary did it.
I'm so sad that this album did not do well, but it without a doubt receives 5 of 5 stars from me. If you enjoy good music, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. You may have to order it online. I don't know if you can find it on the shelf anymore.
Respectfully,
Dave Burr |

Dave, I too love this album.
"Red Red Wine and Cheatin' Songs" has the kind of hard driving delivery that Marty does so well.
"The Greatest Love of All Time" is equally terrific, IMO.
Folks, if "Greatest Love.." doesn't grab you by the heart, you might want to check and see if it's still there.
Like Dave says, listen to the album all the way through to catch the full gravity of it.
Sometimes a concept album won't do well for any number of reasons, but this one's a keeper. |

I think this is Marty's best album ever.
As far as concept albums go, this one is in the top five of my all time favorite concept albums(Tom Russell's "The Man From God Knows Where" is at #1).
"The Pilgrim" has it all, romance, cheatin', heartache, drinkin', murder, and suicide. What more could you ask for? |

Well said Dave, that's exactly why I like this album too, apart from the music itself of course.
My favourite song: The observations of a crow. Great story in a relaxed atmosphere!

Listened to it again today... Everytime I hear Gary playing steel on "Reasons" it makes me want to cry. What soul!!

Listened to this CD from our public library last week... great record!
I detect more than a hint of Hughey's solo from "Look @ Us" in the solo for "Reasons"... Gary paying tribute to the maestro I suspect....
what a tragic loss... what a great player. |
