Hi folks!
A question for you 12-tone experts out there:
Just curious --how is 12-tone music notated on the staff? Doesn't it get all cluttered up with sharps, flats & naturals? Is a non-standard kind of notation used?

No key signature, so accidentals for each note- but jazz musicians do this regularly as well. As far as clutter- not as bad as modern music notated with quarter tones!

Some people use extra rules like "only sharps" or "only flats". Since the usual rules of tonal grammar don't apply, there's no reason to use enharmonic equivalents. Also, some composers specify that an accidental only affects one note - doesn't carry over into the rest of the bar, or affect other octaves.
But yes, it STILL looks really cluttered and some composers shopped around a bit for other notations.
Fortunately 12-tone music shows no signs of taking over or, God forbid, a serious revival. The trend even in tonal music is towards less chromatic rather than more because, let's face it, it sounds better to most people.
