Does anyone know if guitarist Hank Garland played on any of George Jones albums or singles during the 1950s or 1960s? If so, which ones? Thanks in advance for any info. |

(this,from Lloyd Green)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Under "Music" a gentleman named John Pelz asks if Hank Garland recorded with George Jones in the 1960s or '70s. Hank played a magnificent solo on Jones's Mercury recording of "Too Much Water Running Under The Bridge".
It was recorded in March 1957 at RCA Studio "B", barely a month after the studio had first opened. It was my first Nashville recording session. Hank Garland and I split a verse solo on the tune. The song reached #13 in Billboard.
Regards,
Lloyd Green"
Jody-- Thank you very much for the info. I'll drop Roy a line.
Lloyd-- It was a great pleasure to see your response to my post. Along with Graham, I, too, hope you don't mind Graham's posting a few recordings of steel guitar history, because young (well, I'm 35; a newbie to the SG Forum & the world of steel guitar, though) pups like me need to hear this stuff! I'm working on my 4th listen to "Too Much Water Under The Bridge" as I write this, and it's great!
And thank you for the "assist," Smiley.
Graham-- I for one thank you for posting the tunes.
Now that I think of it, this whole topic began as a discussion between me & my brother-- we were wondering if that was Hank Garland standing behind George Jones on the cover pic of Musicor Records' LP release of the Jones album, "I'm A People"(MM2099)...
John,
On that album cover,the guitar player is Jack Watkins. He,also,worked w/ Ronnie Milsap for a period of time,& I believe, Connie Smith.
John,
I just discovered this thread. I see Hank from time to time, as he lives about an hour from my home with his Brother, Billy, and Billy's wife, Amy. I don't personally know the answer to your question but it looks like Smiley gave an authoritative answer. I hesitate to ask Hank, as his memory of those days is not the greatest, and it disturbs him when he can't recall something like that. I once asked him about Jabo Arrington, who played twin guitars with Hank when they were know as "Junior and Jabo" on the Opry. He thought for awhile, then asked "Didn't he have a finger missing?" He barely remembered Jabo, although they were a well known pair at one time. |
Hi Roy,
I understand. I got an answer to my question about the album cover, and like I say, that's where this whole thread started for me, at least. Thank you everybody for all your help! |
