The Twenty-fourth Hour
There are twenty-three hours that I can get by
But the twenty-fourth hour is the one when I cry
I pray that it won't come, but it comes anyhow
And the twenty-fourth hour is right about now
CHORUS:
Right about now, the heartaches start callin'
Right about now, the teardrops start fallin'
The late show is over, and there's no place to go
And it's right about now that I miss you so
I start counting the hours when daylight begins
For I know that when night comes, just how it will end
I pray that it won't come, but it comes anyhow
And the twenty-fourth hour is right about now
REPEAT CHORUS

Dave: There is a very unusual steel riff in that song by, I'm pretty sure Jimmy Day but it could have been Buddy Emmons as well and I was wondering if you have mastered it ??
As best I can recall, it was strings 9-7-6 on a standard E9th; two fretts up from the key position with the B pedal engaged. You rolled back to the key frett and released the B pedal but the unique voicing was that he also added the first string into the structure as it was glissing backwards.
Today that would be pretty hard to reach for but remember that in those days, the 1st string; F#; was in the 10th string position when it was first used, so the reach wasn't too hard then.
Just wondering, wondering as Webb Pierce used to sing...

I had a D-8 Fender and my 9th tuning began with the G# on the first string. I dropped the low B to get the F# on the 8th string. That 2nd/9th tone, in a high register, was what made the chord so unusual and it would not have been the same voicing without that chromatic string being in there. It's the start of the intro and the start of the steel part of the turn whetre he used it. Day had a million of those special sounds that he used with Geoprge Jones, Ray Price and Jim Reeves and made him the Soul of Steel he was known for.

Billy, I'm using the same tunings it originally had, which are C6, E13 and E9/A6. I guess it'd be very off-topic to list them more specifically here so I'll send you an email, ok!? Thanks, Jussi |

Back to the 24th hour. There's a version on the Step One records album called "Hot Texas Country" by Darrel McCall and Johnny Bush. Darrel does the lead vocal on this one and nails it to the max!! I have the Ray Price original and IMHO this one is the best of the two. I'm not sure if Buddy plays on the Price tune but he's on the McCall version and it's the best I've ever heard. If you ever hear Buddy at Scotty's when Darell's there too they'll do this live and it'll make your hair stand on end....JH
