Martin just made their millionth guitar, and pulled out all the stops with gold and diamond inlays. It's currently on display at the NAMM show. Pictures will soon be up at the Martin web site.
I think it's the most ornate guitar I've ever seen. But it's not at all garish. The only phrase to describe it is eye candy. It's just gorgeous.
This guitar is not for sale. It will never even be played, except possibly by Martin employees. It's going in the Martin museum. (I didn't even know there was one,) If you ever get the chance to see this beauty, don't pass it up.[This message was edited by Mike Perlowin on 18 January 2004 at 03:37 AM.] |

#500,000 is also in the museum (a small area in the Martin factory in Nazareth, PA) - it's a standard D28 with the signatures of all CFM employees in neat perpendicular lines on the spruce top.
With true egalitarianism, Chris Martin IV takes his place in alphabetical order.

It takes awhile to find exactly how to navigate around the Martin site to find the guitar. Here's a link directly to the article and picture.

Martin started in 1833 and hit the half million mark in 1990 and are already over a million by 2004.
So it took Martin 157 years to make the first 500,000 guitars and only 13 years to make the next 500,000.
I didn't know that the acoustic guitar market was doing that well. |
