Here's a list of who's in there now.
http://www.countrymusichalloffame.com/inductees
Carl Smith finally made it... Who else needs to be there? Here are some folks on my list:
Ralph Stanley (Stanley Brothers)
Jean Shepard
Connie Smith
Wilburn Brothers
Johnny Paycheck
There is definitely an argument for George Strait who has accomplished twice enough to get him in there. There are just too many who aren't in there that need to go before him.
What about it? Let's hear your thoughts on it.
Respectfully,

I think the Stanley Brothers should be in there.
I also think that it's time to induct a few steel players.
They have a ton of guitar players, singers, fiddlers, piano players, and even a few banjo pickers.
So this year should be Johnny Paycheck and Buddy Emmons. |

I just looked through the list. They don't even have Shot Jackson, Brother Oswald, Bud Isaacs, Lloyd Green, Jerry Byrd, Speedy West, there are no steel players in the HOF.
An instrument that is SO identified with country music and the "Hall Of Fame" hasn't even recognized any of its legendary players.[This message was edited by Alvin Blaine on 13 January 2004 at 03:00 PM.] |

They attempted to play "catch up" in 2001 and elected 12 members to the HOF. Maybe they need to do that again.
I just read the election process. You can find it at this link: http://www.countrymusichalloffame.com/inductees/election_process.html
I thought it interesting that the nominating committee only cosists of a small percentage of the CMA body (12 people). According to the link the 12 people can nominate (by secret ballot) no less than 10 and no more than 20 people, of which the entire CMA body (over 300) votes on. Hypothetically, that could be as many as 240 nominations.
I also find it interesting that for the 2003 Hall of Fame election, the category of Recording and/or Touring Musician Active Prior to 1980 was created. I'd be interested how many nominations were thrown in for this category.
Seems as if there is no real set criteria for the nominations.
Respectfully,

OK Randy
I'll go for Tom T. Hall, but just because you play drums you go and pick a drummer.
Buddy Harman should be reconized, but I think they should put a steel player in before that.
What about some of the big names from the '60s and '70s like Charlie Rich, Jerry Reed, Glen Campbell, Bobby Bare, and my bigest pick of who should be in.......

I don't see Jean Sheperd (sp) in there anywhere. I think she's a likely candidate.

If you count up the number of hall of famers he has worked for(7?) I would say Buddy Emmons. Also Paycheck and Connie Smith. |

I would definetly say the Wilburns, and then a very unheralded fellow, Billy Walker. During his career, he had 32 top ten songs and six of them go to No. 1. And I feel he had the definitive version of "Funny How Time Slips Away". Just my two cents worth, anyway. |

DON HELMS
Needs to be done while he is still with us.
He has been an active participant in almost all of Country Music's History.
Would put a Steel Guitarist in the CMA HOF for the first time also.
If inducted, he should be allowed to speak, they might learn something from this man.
Probably won't happen, but it should.[This message was edited by John Floyd on 18 January 2004 at 03:53 AM.] |
