Earl is 80 today. one of the true innovators and absolute master of his instrument. as far as steel guitar content, we can thank him for inspiring josh graves to apply his techniques to the dobro and recreate that instrument as well. has any other band besides flatt & scruggs ever had TWO guys that singlehandedly did as much to reinvent the instruments they play and leave a legacy of players following and expanding upon their styles as earl and josh?
i also heard that this year the country music hall of fame museum will release a DVD of the old flatt & scruggs TV shows. i'm looking forward to that.

Congrats, Earl! In honor of his birthday, I picked up a copy of The Three Pickers, also featuring Doc Watson and Ricky Scaggs. Great stuff! Pick 'n' grin forever, Earl!

Happy Birthday Earl... he gave me many hours of listening pleasure as I was growing up, and those old early 50's radio transcriptions still give me goosebumps.
I didn't know it was his birthday, thanks. I unwittingly played a tribute to him on New Year's eve, when someone asked me to go home during break (2 blocks) and get my banjo, and play "Earl's Breakdown". So,I did. Hadn't played it in years. I'm darn glad I did.
