The family of gospel singer Jake Hess issued a statement Sunday
morning that he passed away at age 76. He had been in failing health
recently due to a heart attack and pneumonia.

He was a legend in "Southern Gospel" and traveled extensively with the
Gaither ensemble.

He had a great sense of humor and was perhaps known for having the
worst toupee around; a fact he didn't hide.

I've watched the Gaither shows many times, and was always impressed by the fact that Jake always had that big grin. The Cathedrals, The Goodmans, Jake. There'll be some fine Gospel singin goin on up there!!!

We'll miss you, Jake. But Hank Snow had the toupee thing, hands DOWN!
May God comfort the grieving family.

Elvis Presley's favorite singer...he wanted Jake to sing at his funeral....also as part of the Statesmen, Jake sang at Hank Williams funeral, 50 years ago. Hovie Lister described Jake as "often imitated, never equalled", he stands alone as THE major influence on every gospel singer...incidently, Jake was the founder of the Imperials. What a life, what a career..I doubt there will be another.
