Any body know when Curly played at the California Country Club, I think Al Bruno was playing lead, who was playing drums an bass? it looks like late 70's early 80's he was playing MCI Steel, also was the Club in Calif or some other state, or any thing else you might remenber about that day. Thanks Jerry

The lead guitartist is Johnny Davis who used to work at Barcus-Berry and the show was taped at the Ontario Country Club, I heard in '84 or so, according to sources. Johnny is now living in Prescott AZ and has been playing at the newly formed Arizona Steel association gatherings plus the Marty Robbins Memorial show with Billy Easton and Three Wheel Drive band. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I've known Johnny since the sixties when he was playing at the old Hitching Post in Gardena, Calif. I remeber they had another steeler who's name I can't remember but Johnny was on lead guitar and doubled on steel. He played a Fender 400 single 8 for most of the time he was in LA and got more out of it than most of the good D-10 players could from theirs. I had the good fortune to do a few gigs with Johnny from time to time over the years on both lead and steel and he was one helluva musician to say the least. He was quiet, laid back, and didn't have to say much as his pickin' spoke for him. It's a shame he never came into national attention as he could do it all as well or better than any of the big boys. Johnny loved Chalker and it showed in his steel playing and on guitar he loved Les Paul and Chet for sure but could keep up with or surpass Joe Maphis or Jimmy Bryant on hot hillbilly flat pickin'. On the Speedy West/Jimmy Bryant album (For the last Time) JB does a pretty slow instrumental that John wrote called "Lazy Guitar". Check it out if you get a chance. The song works great on steel too. Johnny worked at Standel Amps for a long time and was smart enough to do the day thing before the bottom fell out of the music scene in L.A.
Jerry T. On that show you mentioned, I think that Jim Bob Sedgwick of the forum was playing bass and maybe Leo Eiffert on drums. Jim Bob will probably come on here and let us know for sure.. Have a good 'un, JH

Some time within the next year, there will be a couple of DVDs of the material on the video, plus a few of the tunes where the soundtrack was not recorded on the videotape, but was dubbed in. The DVD master of the St Louis portion is already finished.

The quality, while still leaving much to be desired, is still considerably better than that of the VHS copies.

This is being done by our fellow forumite Mike Brebes, who is donating his time and expertise to the project.

I am not involved in this project, other than having supplied Mike with the original master recordings, so I can give no information as to when it will be completed or made available.

BTW, the California Country Club was in the city of Onterio, about 45 miles east of L.A. I doubt that it still exists. The 2 concerts that comprise the video were both taped in December of 1986, about 2 weeks apart. I was fortunate enough to attend the one in California, and to this day I think it was the best steel guitar show I've ever seen.

Seeing a lot of different performers playing short sets at the convention or Dallas is cool, but seeing Curly really stretch out over an entire afternoon was a very special experience.
