Does anyone out there remember this song. I think it was by Red Foley. I was just a kid and my oldest brother would play guitar and sing it for me. It was a very special song for me. I had a big ol' dog through my childhood and early teens and his name was Shep.
If you know the words or where I might find them, I'd appreciate an Email. I can remember some of the words, but not all of them.
Thanks,
BB

When I was a lad
And Old Shep was a pup ...
Over hills and meadows we'd stray.
Just a boy and his dog,
We were both full of fun.
We grew up together that way.

I remember the time
at the old swimmin' hole,
When I would have drowned
beyond doubt.
Shep was right there
To the rescue he came
He jumped in
and then pulled me out.

As the years fast did roll,
Old Shep he grew old.
His eyes were fast growing dim.
And one day the doctor
looked at me and said,
"I can do no more for him, Jim."

With hands that were trembling,
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at Shep's faithful head.
I just couldn't do it,
I wanted to run.
I wish
they would shoot me instead.

He came to my side,
And looked up at me.
And laid his old head on my knee
I stroked the best friend
That a man ever had,
I cried so I scarcely could see.

Old Shep
he knew he was going to go,
For he reached out
and licked at my hand.
He looked up at me
just as much as to say,
We're parting,
but you understand.

Old Shep he has gone
Where the good doggies go,
And no more with Old Shep will I roam.
But if dogs have a heaven,
There's one thing I know ...
Old Shep has a wonderful home.

This was posted without my reading of it to avoid the tears...

Another one that "does it" is James Taylor's version of "Old Blue".

I remember Elvis's rendition in '56 or '57. It was a tear-jerker for sure.

I can't help to believe that I will someday again hold Blackie, Spook, Bones, Muffy, Daisy, Henretta - all the wonderful canine loves I've had over my lifetime. Actually, Henretta was a hen, but hung out with the dogs and cats. THE JOY THEY BRING IS AWESOME!

At a Record show some time back I found the RED FOLEY "Old Shep" album.I think Billy Robinson played Steel on this record. I love animals and this would be a good tribute songto animal lovers. Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works

I had an old Reddish Unbreakable (Quaker Label) recording of Old Shep, out of Phila. Pa. by Mac MacQuire, that was released back in the '50's. I had it all these years, but; it finally got away from me just a few years ago, when I cleaned out a little! I was always fond of that song too, because; I am also an animal (Dog) lover. It's one of the first songs that I learned, when I first got interested in music seriously. I just looked through my collection to find and save it for you, when I realized; it is gone! Sorry, Bobby! “Big John” N.T.S.G.A., Nashville, Tn.

Thanks Big J,
Your thought is as good as if you had actually gotten the copy to me.
Thanks to so many friends and Forum members, I now have a copy of the orignal Red Foley version.
Hope to see ya at one of the future "Super Jams" next year.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
May God bless,
BB

Wish I had a nickel for every time my Momma would make me sing that song when company would come. There were others, "When the Works All Done This Fall", Little Joe The Wrangler", "That Little Shirt My Mother Made For Me" etc, etc.

But then i'll bet i'm not the only one that got to do that either. I always looked forward to it but I couldn't let them know that then. It wasn't til years later that I understood.

When I first started seeing my wife in 1961 (She was 15 and I was 16) I use to sing this song when I was playing bass on shows. It made her cry because it was so sad s I stopped singing it. Every once in a while when I'm a litle irritated at her 'll start to sing it. She gives me a real sad look and shut up real quick.
