I actually have a 10 string Dobro that I custom ordered from the factory in the 70's.

It turns out that it was a bad idea. These things just don't sound very good! I strung it to 10 string c6, and strings 8, 9 and 10 were pretty much useless- they just kinda go "thud" when you hit them. I think that 8 strings is about as much as you can reasonably put on a dobro and expect it to sound worth a damn. Perhaps with a decent pickup system it could still be usable.

I think that too much pressure on the spider and cone just make it dead sounding.

I got Paul Beard to set mine up as an 8-stringer with a Quarterman cone, and it sounds decent now, but nowhere close to my dobro 6 stringer.
