IMO:
for all the hoopla he generated and self-serving interviews sam gave in later years, he still was a pioneer of modern pop music.

There's a guy who made a difference! Who knows if Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash or Charlie Rich would have even had a shot at it if it wasn't for Sam.
I, too, got a bit tired of his self-promotion as the years went by, but I guess people kept asking him to elaborate, so he obliged.

| Talk about what a man with a vision can do! We can only guess how the world would be if it wasn't for Sam; no Elvis "King OF R'n'R", no "Blue Suede Shoes", no "Man In Black", "Nothing Much Shakin' Goin'On", Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton wouldn't be doin' any of those huge stadium shows cause they'd never heard of Howlin Wolf, not to mention the Beatles and all the bands that followed them, and how all that wonderful music has and continues to unite people everywhere, and so on and on and on... And last and definately the least, I wouldn't be here writing this, Thank You Sam!! |

| I knew him well in the early days at WREC, Memphis where I was on a daily radio show with Buck Turner and the Buckaroos. Sam worked on my amp many times; never would accept any payment. He and Buck Turner opened Memphis Recording Service (706 Union Ave.--Sun Rec. Co.). At that time, his goal was to record babies' first cry at local hospitals with his wire recorder--that's all he had then. Buck bailed out; Sam did it all solo. Later I did copyright work for Sam while I attended medical school. That's the same time Elvis, Roy, Jerry Lee were recording just about anything to get into the market.
