I was wondering if the emblem on the headstock gives any clue to the year of the guitar. I was looking at one that read rickenbacker electro los angeles. The emblem was also smaller. It is not the football shaped one. I know this question surely has been answered before. Thanks for any information.

A good source of Rickenbacker lap steel info is the following website: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/1375/rick.html
Hope that helps you out.

Yeah, that's about the best site I've found too.
Carl Dixon also had an essay up somewhere, which basically set the record straight on the patent date (August 10, 1937, if I remember right). So guitars with no mention of the patent may have been built before that date. (The patent was issued for the principles of that pick-up).
However, I've seen some guitars, that I know are later models and that didn't mention the patent. But they for sure stopped having the "patent pending" marking after that date.

I am still collecting pictures of (hopefully ALL) Ricks to eventually put up a more descriptive site with the respective dates.
Please don't hesitate to jaydee@bellsouth.net?subject=Rick pictures or snail mail me any pictures you may have.
