I love it. And such insightful lyrics, too!

(But what I really want to know is, what were you searching for when you "stumbled" upon this auction, Joey? )

$12,000 (Buy It Now) for the "right to record" ?

And I guess he wants royalties on top of that?

What's it normally cost to get the "right to record", besides paying royalties?

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a "right to record" fee. You must pay royalties if you distribute someone else's tune. And I think that amounts to around 9 cents per copy. Of course, it's been a while since I looked into this so I could be all wrong.

If the song has never been released for sale, the writer can ask whatever he wants for the "right to record " it. And you still have to pay the 8 cent royalty. Once the song has been released for sale, anyone can record it, providing they request the statuatory license (which the writer/publisher has to give), and pay the royalty.

Of course, 12 grand...well, there's a sucker born....

Not that it matters..but it's 8 cents per song with up to a 5 minute length and a minimum of 500 copies, so it's actually $40 per song/500 distribution. thanks Jim..

....(Tony Prior)....$40 per song/500 distribution....

Tony is correct of course, $40 for the "mechanical license" plus $2.00 administration fee for the Harry Fox Agency (a bargain). www.genejones.com

I agree , $40 for the mechanical and the $2 agency fee to distribute 500 pieces is a pretty fair deal.

Hmmm...let's see...500 copies=$42/song for Harry Fox. Wonder how much of that the songwriter gets? Dumb question, I know, but I had to ask!
