they have a website:
pedalsteeltransmission.com/
There are a few indie rock bands that are trying to hitch there little red wagons to the shooting star of glamour and coolness that is the pedalsteel guitar.

Would somebody tell an ignoramus from South Carolina just what this dude is trying to do to that steel guitar?
I'll tell you right now, WHATEVER it is, it's got ol' Buddy's "spinning bar" trick beat all to pieces!
Hey Bagwell, is this one of Rocket's students? |

Whatever it is he's doing, it's on a Dekley. At least it won't hurt the guitar a bit!

It would be a great time for the .011 string to snap.
Where's his Bar? Nevermind, I don't want to know.
The band calls itself PST.
In Canada that means Provincial Sales Tax.[This message was edited by Joey Ace on 08 December 2002 at 01:50 PM.] |

They seem to be a busy band and the MP3's from there site sound good. Whoever it is playing steel on the tracks is coming up with some nice stuff.
Hmmmm.....
Lets see, there is a band out there having fun playing music with a steel and then there are us steel guitar forum guys in a chat room degrading a young steel player that we know nothing about....

I like it!
It's a rock band using a "country" instrument to good effect --which is good for that instrument.
Infinitely preferable to all the country artists out there who seem to be ashamed of being called "country" and therefore disguise themselves in the trappings of rock 'n' roll.

I've worked on stages so tiny that this was the technique I used to get behind my guitar.
If you're short-legged you're out of luck.

I re-read the posts and I don't believe anyone's comments were with malicious intent. I think we were just having fun with a funny picture of someone having fun.
The website was entertaining and his pose may actually have been to make the point that that "thing" is as hard to play as a brahma bull is to ride.

all too true Bob. I wish more of 'em had my phone number...

A buddy of mine used to drum for them. Saw them at a tiny little place in Chicago. Sounded great...not country, but country-influenced with a heavy dose of rock.

On the notion of rock using PSG, I really like a band from Athens, GA called Japancakes. You can download a nice tune of theirs from www.epitonic.com, and probably find some more stuff online. They play instrumental music, with drums, elec. bass, cello, PSG, and elec. guitar. Nice stuff, I've seen em a handful of times here in Austin.

Interesting that you mention that because I think that Pedal Steel Transmission cites Japancakes as one of their influences. It gives me a warm fuzzy to see PSG showing up in these indie bands. |

Well, I think they're pretty cool.
Del, I don't know if a lap steel in an indie band will make you feel quite as fuzzy as pedal steel, but you're welcome to check out my most recent indie steel:

Lap Steel, Resonator, PSG, in new bands will all give me a warm fuzzy feeling. Its good to see any steel guitar cropping up in new and interesting places. Now if we can start to figure out who exactly is using steel guitar out there, we could keep better tabs on them, since some of us seem to want to know what is going on in the front lines.
Placer ehh? Sounds pretty good to me. I think I am going to start paying much more attention to indie types and forget all these pablum puking, Clear Channel corporate swine--dogs. [This message was edited by Del Rangel on 12 December 2002 at 12:34 PM.] |

Here are a few indie bands that use steel sometimes:
Bright Eyes
Giant Sand
Mendoza Line
Elk City
Mike Kinsella
Hem
there are piles of them.
John Neff stays busy in that scene.

BTW: Nice work Mr Gleason !
