Hi guys,
I am going to Nashville the week of August 15 and am planning on going to the Opry. I have a question. What is the difference of the Grand Ol' Opry at the Ryman? Or is there a difference? Also, do you have any suggestions about which show to go to that week? I know this is far in advance.

Tim, The Ryman is a converted tabernacle in downtown Nashville. The Grand Ole Opry was held there until sometime in the '70s. At that point it was moved to a new large concert hall out in the Eastern suburbs at Opryland. Nowadays they have the Opry show sometimes at one place, sometimes at the other. You have to check the schedule to find out. In picking the show you will go to, you might be more interested in the performers than the venue.

The new place is bigger and newer and in a large shopping mall. The Ryman is smaller and older and surrounded by the ambience of lower Broadway. It no longer has Sho-Bud and as many of the small honky-tonks, but Tootsies and some other places are still there.

I took my kids and relatives to Nashville last summer. We took in the Opry in the Mall, but also visited some downtown places. If you like Bluegrass, the Station Inn is a great place to go after the Opry.

Have a great trip, we did.

The opry is at the Ryman from Nov until March.
The Ryman is downtown Nashville and Broadway is one block south. The new Hall of Fame is
another block so it's all you need unless your going to the Midnight Jamboree.
