Black Bass Strings?

Does anyone remember the black bass strings from about 30 or 35 years ago? What were they made out of? Are they still made?

Those are black nylon tape wound on a steel core. In the guitar shop I work at I have one or two customers that still use them. Fender still makes them and so does Roto-Sound.
