A glimmer of hope for all of you, like me, who are bemoaning the fact that traditional country music is becomming less and less on the airwaves. I've subscribed to Sirius saltellite radio in my car for about three months now, largely because they offer one channel devoted to nothing but traditional country and one channel devoted to nothing but alt-country (=traditional country + roots rock). It costs me $13 per month but man is it worth it - no commercials, no political ads, just music and a little bit of DJ intros to the music, which are usually pretty good. On top of that, I can listen from coast to coast and they have 60 other channels like it.
I've just received an Email from Sirius saying that they are starting a WSM channel, which will include the full Opry broadcasts both nights -plus the regular WSM broadcast. Looks like I need to get one of these things for my house.
Immagine how impossible this method of broadcasting the Opry would have sounded to the folks who started the Opry 75+ years ago.

The least expensive way is to buy a satellite receiver/converter unit for your car. I think the converters have come down to about $150 installed, including rebates. It allows you to receive the satellite stations on your car radio. A lot of places in this area sell them, including Best Buy and Circuit City.
You can also get satellite ready car in-dash CD/radios, but it'll cost you more money.
By the way, I made a buisness trip to Indy today and the WSM channel is already on the satellite. I listened to WSM on the way down. It was CD quality, without interference. |

Have you found a songwriter's channel yet? This year at Tin Pan South, Sirius recorded one of the sessions (one with Don Schlitz, Fred Knobloch, and Tom Schuyler).
They made it sound like it was going to be broadcast on some new "songwriter's channel". Yet, I've never seen that in any of their brochures or the website.
I'd actually get the system if they had such a thing.
Do they have the receivers out yet that can receive XM or Sirius? I suspect only one of these companies is going to make it. I'm not sure it's going to be Sirius, either. |
