Anybody who takes country very seriously had better stop reading now, but I heard a brilliant CD at the Upton Jazz Festival yesterday and I wonder if anyone else knows it.
It was by Run C & W and consisted of Bluegrass versions of Soul hits like Wilson Pickett's "Midnight Hour" and Otis Redding's "My Girl".
My first reaction was to laugh, but some of those tunes work so well bluegrass style that they could become part of the repertoire. And the playing is wonderful with some nice resonator guitar (which may or may not be a Dobro!) Did anybody on here play it?
If you have a sense of humour and like bluegrass I recommend it, and I'm looking for a copy!

I don`t know who the Dobro player is but wouldn`t be surprised if Bernie Leadon played the parts in additon to the 5-string instrument. My favorite on the CD is Walking the Dog,BTW.

| I think the Nashville Network did a special on them a few years ago - Kind of a "Documentary", with a lot of music. The cd doesn't give credit to whoever is playing the resophonic guitar. I listen to it, get tickled, and get impressed fairly often. |

| I saw these guys in Brooklyn a few years ago. They performed in 'fat suits'--over-stuffed warmup track suits--looked sort of like the Michelin man. They did what they did well enough to pull it off. But it's a one joke gag that sort of wore thin real fast for me. It didn't help that they were on a bill with the very excellent Cox Family and sort of detracted from the Cox's very sincere vibe. But like I said, they did their thing well. Others have done convincing BlueGrass conversions of pop tunes--who did the Beatle's "I've just seen a face"? It totally works. Why not Motown? |

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Run C&W's second album titled "Roe vs. Wade" (Row verses Wade)? I've been lookin' for that one for a few years.

Just a note to add. I just heard a bluegrass group from up here on the public radio station the other day doing selections from their new album. It is a complete blugrass version of Pink Floyds The Wall.

Craig,
That's a different band, as you are probably aware. I'd hesitate to call them bluegrass. Even tho they used banjo etc. on the CD, they travel w/2 gtr, bass, drums, and pedal steel.
