I recently discovered what a great jazz guitar player Clint Strong is. Did he play with Merle Haggard? Alongside Roy Nichols or instead of him? Are there any recordings of him with Merle?
All these questions.......
Thanks.

Hi Tony,
I can't answer your Merle question, but I can direct you toward some of Tom Morrell's recordings, particulary "Pterodactyl Ptales" (How the West was Swung, Vol. IV). Mr. Strong plays some great stuff on there, imho. Jazz chops with appropriate country tone.

I believe Clint started with Merle around the mid 80's, when Roy Nichols was still in the band but perhaps no longer in the best of health. Clint stayed in the band for quite a while; well into the 90's I think, though I don't know exactly when he left. He's on the live "Amber Waves of Grain" album and also "Friend in California" among many others. He sure is a pretty awesome player! I'm sure it's Reggie Young on the original cut of "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink" though. Last time I saw Clint (years ago) he was playing in Reno, Nevada.

Glad to hear Clints name mentioned here on the forum again. he was mentioned several months ago with a similar topic. Clint was playing alongside Roy Nichols, or at least the times I saw Merle on TV concerts. I have a few shows on video tape and all three were playing solo's, Roy, Clint and Merle. Clint is a real fine player, he was a great addition to Merles lineup. I am a big fan of his playing for sure.

His stint was about 1985-1995 and then he was laid off.
Roy was still with the group when Clint joined, and left in 1987 after 22 years on the road with Haggard.

Merle took his wife, Theresa, off of Clint's hands. That probably explains the layoff.

Those are some great tunes with a whole lot of great guitar in there. Tough to beat originals, but I prefer the cuts on Live at Billy Bob's with Redd Volkert and Norm Hamlet; mostly because THERE'S MORE STEEL.

According to Merle's latest autobiography, the lady was Clint's girlfriend. Merle had her meet him in his (Merle's) room. Clint was outside banging on the door wanting to know what was going on...
Merle also had some disparaging remarks concerning James Burton also. In one place in the book he refers to James as Elvis's guitar player. In another place he tells of Elvis's guitar player trying to get Roy Nichol's job.
Pretty interesting reading.

Clint's video on guitar is absolutely amazing. I really like his style.
