I know he's got some serious fans around here...
Did he ever cut a solo record?
What has he done aside from the Troubadours and the Emmons 'Sings Bob Wills' lp that really showcase his jazz playing?

I'm sure he's done a lot of guitar sessions. But, did you know he played really good bass on at least one of George Strait's early albums?

I did a session in 1968 when I was with Little Darlin Records, and Leon Rhodes was on that session. Along with LLoyd Green, Hargus Robbins, Junior Huskey, Buddy Spicher.
But leon was one of the busiest session players in town at that time.

Apparently there was a tribute website to Leon, but it's long down and I never got a chance to check it out.
I have heard that Leon's earliest professional gig was with the Western Cherokees (a group that used pickers like Norm Stephens, Jody Sanders, Bobby Garrett, Jimmy Biggars, Big Red Hayes, Little Red Hayes, Pee Wee Whitewing, Bobby Black, etc); and of course he was with various ex-Western Cherokees with Ray Price in the 1950s as a member of the Cherokee Cowboys.
I've wondered if he'd done any more jazzier sides or projects.

| In the early 50s Leon was staff guitar player on the BIG D Jamboree in Dallas. George McCoy on steel, and Billy Jack Saucier on fiddle. Does anyone know if George and Billy Jack are still with us ? .Jody. |

Jody, I have heard that Billy Jack passed away, but my source (back in '99) told me that Dale Noe had also passed away, but a few months later I found out that Noe had just been interviewed for the then upcoming Wynn Stewart box set.
