Go here and download To Soon For Love. It was recorded on a ZOOM PS-02 recorder. I'd say it's Country/Folk. It's nice to actually find good music on the internet from an unknown. |

Hmmm, sounds strangely familiar, doesn't it? It actually reminds me very much of the song stylings of the group "America" from the late '60's to early '70s.
Yes, I agree Erik. If you stay out of the record stores, and get on the computer, you can hear all sorts of good things! |

Yes, it does sound a lot like "America." I saw another string on the forum recently in which Ryan Adams was discussed. He also reminds me of the bubblegum folk/pop of the 70's -- no real twang, but does use more or less folk/country cord progressions. Yes, i was trying to figure out who it was he sounded like. But kept coming up empty. America fits. Nice observation. But at some point everything new sounds old, don't you think? |

To tell you the absolute truth, you've hit on my theory of why it seems like (at least to me) that most "new" music seems a bit stale, at best these days.
Considering the mind-boggling volume of music that has been written and recorded in the last 75 years or so, it's not that difficult to accept the idea that there isn't a lot of music that can be written that won't sound like something that's already been done.

"There is nothing new under the sun..." (Somebody said that.)
"Good music never goes out of style."
(I said that one! ) |

I know you've never heard the likes of

Aside from the acoustic guitar, I guess I don't really hear anything in that song, or the others there that reminds me too much of America, but what do I know?
Ryan Adams writes great songs. Some of his solo work is ok, but most of it pales in comparison to what he did when he was with Whiskeytown. If you go to
http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1414678621/pagename=/ RP/CDN/FIND/discography.html/artistid=Whiskeytown/ you can listen to clips of the band. Faithless Street is my personal favorite..the version w/ the bonus tracks. Amidst the flood of alt-country copycats, this band stood out from the rest of the herd. Faithless Street is one of the best post-Gram Parsons era records I've heard. Nice mix of rockers and weepers. Stranger's Almanac is right there as well. Pneumonia is their last release, and has a more slick, produced feel to it that I can't get totally comfortable with.
