I've looked everywhere you can think of and cannot seem to find a copy of Rose City Chimes by Bobby Garrett on a 45 rpm record. Any of you know where a copy can be found. I have it on CD but want a record to frame and put up. Thanks!

It is on the LP "Live at the Record Shop"
Ernest Tubb and the Texas Troubadors (featuring Buddy Emmons)
Buddy and Leon do a great job on this tune.
Note: This album is a studio recording engineered to "sound live" ...
Buddy confirmed that it was a studio album....
FYI,

Rick,
There are two 45's of Bobby playing "Rose City Chimes".
(1958?) Trophy - 501 "Rose City Chimes / "Bobcat" (goodluck trying to find one of whose)
(1964-65?) Longhorn - 542 "Rose City Chimes / Moonlit Shore" (I got 2 of these. one with a Dallas address and one with a Nashville address. I'll keep an eye out for another one.)

Jason,
The info I have list Longhorn - 544 (1964) WILLS, BOB "BUFFALO TWIST/SOONER OR LATER (YOU'LL FALL)". So the Bobby Garrett (#542) would be 63 or 64. I don't have a reference year close enough for any before that to be helpful.

The Brazos Valley Boys version with Garrett, is on the Hank Thompson's "Cheyenne Frontier Days"-album. It's pretty easy to find. |

Hi Rick--
You are talking about the Rose City Chimes with Johnny Gimble playing a great electric mandolin solo. This was used as Ralph Emerie's radio show theme music.
I play electric mandolin & looked a *long* time for this item. Funny it should be so rare on 45, given that it was widely heard.
I have the recording, which someone kindly
burned for me, but not the 45 itself.
Would consider trades for this and similar material I have. Joel (mojo@tiac.net)[This message was edited by Joel Glassman on 05 March 2002 at 08:18 AM.] |

I believe the Gimble related version of RCC was the Trophy single that Kevin mentioned. I'm sure that's the one Ralph used. |

By the way, if anyone's curious about the Longhorn material, I've got a collection of the Dewey Groom sides and it's great stuff.
Dewey maintained a large band for the 1960s and although I understand they could really swing most of his records are Texas honky-tonk in a commercial setting, kind of a nice country pop mix but no heavy backing chorus or strings.
A real treat when I finally managed to track down a copy, not earth shattering, but just fine music.
I haven't heard any of the Wills Longhorn material, but a few people have told me it's fantastic, there's a couple of complaitions that collect his last singles with the Teas Playboys (1964) and his solo album from 1965 which is an informal pickin' and sittin' set. |

The German Cattle Records has released those Dewey Groom sides on a vinyl LP several years back, good stuff. I was surprised about the "pop" flavor on'em. Jason, Bear Family has released Wills' Longhorn sides on one cd. Half of the cd is the album of Bob doing traditional Texas fiddle tunes. On the rest, there's great steel by Crownower and Maurice. |
