How do you go about finding out who holds the copyrights to a song that was recorded way back when?

If you're trying to figure out who to pay to use the songs, try the Harry Fox Agency at www.songfile.com They handle most published songs.

How "way back when" are you talkin' 'bout?
Although they've just, recently, passed a statute that the song, depending on when it was written, will be copyrighted for a period of 28 yrs.,plus the life of the writer,(or something like that),the original law stated,28 yrs.,with an option to renew for another 28,(56 yrs. total). Then, the song becomes "P.D. (public domain). So,it will depend on whether the song was written "pre-statute" or "post-statute".
