Topic: Anyone remember Larry McNeely on the Glen Campbell show ? |

When Glen had his tv show in the 60s, a youngster by the name of Larry McNeely would come out on center stage with Glen and pick a tune or two on his 5 string banjo. That hooked me on the banjo back then, even tho I didnt start playing until years later. I was just curious if anyone remembered those shows. It would be fun to see the reruns of them. Larry was and still is one of my favorite banjo players. I know how many people on this forum love the banjo like I do  !! I must admit I am addicted to the banjo now more than the steel, altho I still love them both as well as the guitar . |

| I sure do remember Larry..great musician.I remember when he was starting out in Nashville as a very young fellow he was working for Roy Acuff.Story has it that Roy fired him because he wouldn't cut his hair.Next thing ya'know Larry's on the west coast on a net work show having the time of his life with Glen.Haven't heard a word about him in many years. |

Larry McNeely was a talented session musician best known for his work with Roy Acuff and Glen Campbell. A native of Lafayette, Indiana, he was born into a musical family, but didn't begin learning to play piano until he was 13. He then learned guitar and banjo. He got his start at age 17 with the Pinnacle Mountain Boys. In 1965 he moved to Nashville to work for the Sho-Bud Guitar Company. There he met Acuff and joined his Smoky Mountain Boys. He remained with them through the decade's end and then moved to California, where he joined Glen Campbell's band after John Hartford left. He recorded his first solo album, Glen Campbell Presents Larry McNeely, in 1971. He remained with Campbell through 1974, and then left the touring circuit to work as a session man. McNeely played on numerous albums, movie soundtracks, commercials, and in 1977, he recorded two albums for different labels. He went back to Nashville in 1984 to try the bluegrass scene, but soon returned to work with Acuff, with whom he played until Acuff's death in 1992. After that McNeely began working with Russ and Becky Jeffers and Smoky Mountain Sunshine.

Larry played on all the Dukes Of Hazzard TV shows except for the last year or so, when Bill Knopf played the banjo.

| I -do- remember Larry McNeely - Thanks Jason for the information. Got to see Larry live years back - was lucky enough to get to see a taping of the "Glen Campbell Show" at CBS in Hollywood once. |

| When I first went to work for George Hamilton,IV in 1969, we did a lot of Acuff-Rose package shows with Roy Neil Acuff (Roy's son), and his band consisted of Charlie Collins on rhythm and Larry on lead guitar. Larry was a great guy and very talented. He also did a great impression of Stan Laurel on the Campbell Show. |

Hi guys, my last post was done in a bit of a hurry, but I've been looking for a CD reissue of his first Capitol LP for some time, .. forget trying to find a vinyl.
On a side note, I also heard that Larry did a stint with Jim & Jessie, but could find no mention of it anywhere, interested to note that he worked with Roy Neil Acuff as well, thanks Gregg.
