Here's a list of books that I've found very useful. These are not the books that everyone has but some gems that many people may not know about.
Natural and Artificial Harmonics for the Guitar, by David Winters
Published by David Winters, 1982; revised 1985. Paperbound, 8.5" x 11", 92 pages.
Available from the EMI Bookstore in affiliation with Amazon.com. $14.00 http://www.windworld.com/emi/bookstore/winters.htm
This is a facinating book for all string instruments. It's an all-encompassing
look at the physics & techniques of harmonics with tons of examples and lists
of references for further research. Lots of great info here.
----------------------------
Doug Jernigan's Nashville-style Complete Guide to Scales and How to Best Play Them (C6th) No publisher/date listed. Typewritten; GBC bound. This book is a very handy reference. It shows many positions
for scales in C6th and exhaustively explains the theory behind their use.
----------------------------
The Deluxe Nashville Chord Substitution Manual. Hilton Publishing, 405 Shore Lane, Branson, MO 65616 Paper; GBC bound
This is an amazingly useful & practical book. It not only explains the "what"
of chord subs but most importantly, "why" you use them. I've seen few books on music theory as clear and straightforward as this one. The author for this book isn't listed but I'd bet it was Doug Jernigan because it's in the same typewriter-created mode as the book on C6th scales. I don't know if this is still available. I believe I
bought mine about 5 years ago from Frenchy Messier, in Belen, NM.
----------------------------
Fender: The sound Heard Round The World by Richard Smith. Garfish Publishing company, Fullerton, CA 1995 ISBN 0-9648612-7-5 Harbound; many color & B&W photos.
This is by far the best book on Fender ever published. It's an exhaustive look at the man, the history and the instruments that influenced a generation. Quite a bit of space is devoted to Fender steels and there's
lots of background info here unavailable elsewhere - partially thanks to Jody Carver, who contributed info on Fender's steel pickups. Sadly, this book is now out of print but still available used.
----------------------------
How to Read Music by Roger Evans
Crown Publishers, Inc., 201 East 50th St.
NY, NY 1002. ISBN 0-517-56237-5
Papaerbound. $7
Looking for a clear, practical, cheap book to
learn to read music or clarify those inevitable questions? This is it.
----------------------------
Equally helpful and sized to fit your guitar case is: Music Thoery Made Easy - Everything That You Really Need To Know by David Harp.
Musical I. Press, P.O. Box 1561, Montpelier, VT 05602 ISBN 0-918321-91-3
I'd recommend this one for beginners & Evans book for advanced players.
----------------------------
Dangerous Curves - The Art of the Guitar
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA
ISBN 0-87846-485-9 29.95 Paperbound
This was the companion book to an exhibit at
Boston's MFA last year. It's filled with some of the highest quality photos you'll ever see of instruments from the full history of the guitar including wonderful close ups. Laps steels & resophonics are represented in one chapter. A great book to drool over or learn about the history of the world's most popular instrument.
